Frank Beckwith now says that I am anathema.
Well, OK – He doesn’t use those words. What he has done is join the Catholic Church, which declares as irreformable teaching from the infallible magisterium, that anyone who professes justification by faith is anathema – accursed.
This is what makes it personal. When a person who is a Protestant decides to become a Catholic, they join the team that declares all their former Protestant associates accursed. There’s no way to say “I have become catholic, but I do not doubt your genuine commitment to Christ.” Accursed! Check out what the Catholic Church means by this term here.
Frank, I like you, and I have no doubt of your sincere faith in Christ. It’s a shame you feel fit to deny the same to those who have laboured alongside you.And if you don’t – and naturally, you don’t, why do you yield to the teaching authority of a Church that does?
